Computer Animation Career

Since the invention of video games, computer animation has exploded. Computer animators can find work creating movies, working on computer games, adding animation to websites, as well as any other job that requires some kind of computer animation.

What does a computer animator do?

Those seeking a computer animation career should prepare for long hours at their desk. Depending on where you work and what project you're on, the job can be demanding. You'll be expected to come up with original animations for a variety of situations. One day you might be animating a character in a movie, on another day you'll be creating the opening flash page for a website. Expect a lot of variety.

Typically, computer animators work for businesses, rather than operating independently. They'll receive a project that may take anywhere from one hour to a few months to complete. In some cases, they'll be responsible for coming up with the original design, in other cases they'll only be animating someone else's idea.

How do I become qualified to be a computer animator?

Unlike more traditional jobs, there is no set path to becoming a computer animator. Instead of a resume with school credits, you'll be expected to provide a portfolio showing your computer animation work. This gives those pursuing a computer animation career the choice to attend a technical school or college, or learn independently. Note that while you'll be judged on your portfolio, some positions may require a diploma.

There are pros and cons to each side. Those who choose to teach themselves won't have a guide helping them with what can be a frustrating job. They also may have to purchase expensive computer animation software themselves, rather than relying on what a community college or technological institute may provide. However, they also won't have to fork out the cash for the diploma.

While there is no typical path for those interested in pursuing a computer animation career, the most common scenario is starting at smaller companies before moving up to the majors. This path gives you the chance to grow as an artist and expand your skill set before entering the big leagues.

For those that love animation and computers, a computer animation career is an excellent choice.
