Computer Networking Career

In businesses and organizations, it's not enough to have each computer functioning properly. It must also be able to refer to and share information across a network. And with the proliferation of network security fraud, it's also important that the network be a secure place for that information exchange.

Those responsible for configuring, supporting, and protecting networks and computer systems are in high demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that computer networking careers will grow faster than the average for all occupations.

Computer Networking Careers
The majority of employers prefer candidates with at least a bachelor's degree. With training in computer networking, there are several career opportunities that may be available to you.
  • Network or Computer Systems Administrators are primarily charged with configuring and managing local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and virtual private networks (VPNs), which may involve troubleshooting problems, on site or remotely, and maintaining security features on those networks.
  • Computer Networking Technicians are more hands-on, troubleshooting problems with hardware and software, and performing regular maintenance.
  • Computer and Information Systems Managers generally oversee the work of administrators and technicians. They not only configure and manage computer networks, but they direct long-term network planning, and they supervise other computer-related workers. They may control budgets and oversee future security efforts.
Many people working in computer networking careers will specialize in a field such as network security or software architecture. Those seeking management positions may find that employers prefer further education - for instance, an MBA with an information systems focus.

A computer networking education will likely cover topics like network configurations, DC circuit analysis, network cabling and protocols, network management, network security, telecommunications, or wireless communications management.
