What You Can Expect to Do in a Computer Science Career
A computer science career involves working as a theorist, researcher, and inventor. You can expect the opportunity to examine complex problems and figure out solutions, possibly by creating new technology or applying existing technology in a new way. Most computer scientists specialize in one area, such as hardware design, complex theory, or programming-language design. Or you could work on a multidisciplinary project like advancing virtual reality, extending human-computer interaction, or inventing new robots.
If you work at an academic institution, your job may focus solely on pure theory, while at other organizations you may be under more pressure to produce patents and profits. But this of course can vary depending on your employer.
Required Education for a Computer Science Career
You typically need a Ph.D. to become a computer scientist, although you may be able to get a lower level computer science position with a bachelor's or master's degree. Not having a Ph.D. could limit your advancement opportunities, although in some cases you might be able to make up for it with relevant work experience. Most jobs outside of academic institutions are found in the computer systems design and related services industry, however some computer scientists find jobs with Internet service providers or Web search portals.
The good news is that after getting all that education you should have excellent job opportunities. Computer science is expected to be one of the fastest growing occupations this decade.
