Computer systems analysts enjoy a fast-paced, exciting career with a high salary, job security and opportunities for advancement. This career field is expected to grow by 25% over the next decade; much higher than the national average for other occupations. As more companies transition to cloud-based solutions, cyber security and mobile networks, the demand for qualified professionals will continue to grow. Read on to discover the responsibilities and qualifications for those interested in pursuing a career as a computer systems analyst.

A computer systems analyst studies a company's current computer systems and procedures, and assists them in developing a solution that will enable them to operate more efficiently. They possess an understanding of business practices and information technology, and specialize in implementing solutions that work within the needs and limitations of both. Specific duties include:
  • Consulting with an organization's management team to determine their IT needs
  • Researching innovative technologies to determine if they will increase a company's efficiency
  • Preparing a list of benefits and an analysis of costs for an organization's management team to help them determine whether an upgrade would be financially worthwhile
  • Overseeing the installation and configuration of new computer systems to ensure optimal performance
  • Devising ways to help increase the functionality of existing computer systems
  • Conducting tests to ensure that current systems are performing as expected
  • Training users how to use their computer system for optimal performance and efficiency
Successful computer systems analysts possess strong analytical skills, enabling them to interpret information from a variety of sources and develop solutions that consider all aspects of an organization's needs. Computer systems analysts also need strong communication skills, as their duties include explaining complex issues in a way that is straightforward and easy to understand.

While a bachelor's degree in a computer related field is common among computer systems analysts, it is not always required. Some organizations look for professionals with a liberal arts or business degree and a strong background in computer programming or information technology.
