What Will I Do in an Electrical Engineering Career?

As an electrical engineer, you will find yourself designing, developing, testing and supervising the manufacturing of a variety of electrical equipment. Some of this equipment may include motors, navigation systems, power generation systems and communications systems. Most electrical engineers will work in an office environment but will sometimes find themselves at industrial sites, in labs or on construction sites.

What Skills and Education Can Help Prepare Me for a Career as an Electrical Engineer?

Some of the skills that are important for electrical engineers to have include the ability to concentrate on tasks and to take initiative when beginning new projects. In addition, they have to be able to work with people, need to know how to speak in front of others and will have to have strong analytical skills in areas like calculus and physics.

When it comes to education, it is best to start preparing for a career as an electrical engineer as soon as possible. Classes such as calculus, drafting, physics and trigonometry will be helpful. Students at college should focus on majors in electrical engineering and consider programs that offer co-ops where students can experience a mixture of classroom studies and real-world experience. There are also accelerated programs that combine both bachelor's and master's degree programs into one.

Though licensing is not always required for a career in electrical engineering, it can be in your best interest to become licensed as a PE (Professional Engineer) as you will find more job opportunities and higher wages. In order to become licensed, you will need to attend an accredited school, have work experience and pass an exam.
