An electronics engineering career, sometimes known as a computer software engineer, involves designing and creating computer software. Professionals in this career can work on many types of computer software including operating systems, applications for home and business, network systems, and even computer games.

Engineers research the needs of users and create software to meet the needs. This can include software design, development and testing.

Electronics Engineering Career: Numerous Career Paths

There are generally three types of computer engineers:
  • Computer Applications Engineers
  • Computer Systems Engineers
  • Computer Programmers
Applications engineers design, develop, and maintain software and programs based on users needs. Systems engineers design, develop and maintain overarching computer networks for organizations. Computer programmers take the applications and systems and convert them into various programming languages and develop corresponding user manuals.

Preparing Yourself for an Electronics Engineering Career

A bachelor's degree is usually required for these careers, although occasionally a two-year degree or certification is acceptable. Sometimes a master's degree is required. Work experience is valued, and all professionals in this career are expected to stay up to date on the new and emerging computer technologies.
